“OBEDIENCE IN THE FACE OF FRUSTRATION”
(Numbers 19:1 – 21:35)
“But the Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ’Because you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.’” — Numbers 20:12 (NIV)
By Numbers 20, Moses and Aaron had been leading Israel for decades. They had endured constant complaints, rebellion, and distrust from the people. In this chapter, once again, the Israelites grumble against them, accusing them of leading them to a barren land with no water. Weary and frustrated, Moses approaches God, who instructs him to speak to the rock to bring forth water. Instead, in his frustration, Moses strikes the rock twice with his staff, disobeying God’s command.
Though water flows from the rock, God rebukes Moses and Aaron for their disobedience. Striking the rock rather than speaking to it demonstrated a lack of trust in God and failed to honor His holiness before the people. This act of frustration cost Moses and Aaron the opportunity to enter the Promised Land.
Simple Truth:
While frustration may drive us to disobedience, placing our trust in God allows us to honor Him, even during challenging times.
Reflections & Applications:
1. Frustration and Faith: Moses allowed his frustration with the people to overshadow his trust in God. Are you allowing frustration in your life to affect your obedience to God?
Application: When you feel overwhelmed, pause and seek God’s peace before acting. Trust His instructions, even when emotions run high.
2. Honoring God in Obedience: God wanted to be glorified through Moses’ obedience, but striking the rock failed to reflect God’s holiness. Are you honoring God through your actions, especially in challenging circumstances?
Application: Reflect on areas where your responses may not be honoring to God. Commit to seeking His guidance and obeying Him fully.
3. Consequences of Disobedience: Though God provided water, Moses still faced consequences for his disobedience. Are you mindful of how disobedience, even in small matters, can impact your spiritual journey?
Application: Remember that God calls us to trust Him completely. Pray for the strength to obey Him even when it’s hard.
Prayer:
Lord, in moments of frustration and weariness, help me to trust You and obey Your Word. Keep me from reacting out of emotion, and teach me to honor You through my actions. I appreciate your grace, even when I fall short. May I walk in faithful obedience, trusting in Your guidance always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
